Emilio’s journey as a visual storyteller got off to an early start. Being the son of a filmmaker, film shoots were a familiar setting. He took a serious interest in photography in his early teens and, before his senior year in high school, was already taking on a variety of paid projects. He went on to major in Film at Syracuse University’s prestigious S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Upon graduating Emilio began working in the family business, Guede Films, a production company primarily catering to the advertising industry, with operations in the Caribbean, the United States, as well as Central and South America.
After only a couple of years, Emilio became a sought-after director/cameraman, making the best of his photographic skills, natural instincts, eye for detail and resourcefulness. Several of his early projects won advertising industry awards. Eventually, he began to focus more on his passion, creating images, and continued developing his career as a Director of Photography.
In addition to his busy role behind the camera, Emilio was personally responsible for several milestones in the company’s history, among them, pioneering computerized bidding, launching and expanding its first video post-production facility, which was the first in the local market—and for several years the only one—to adopt game-changing technologies like non-linear editing, and later, digital compositing, visual effects and animation, as well as implementing new processes like transitioning from a film-based to a video-centered workflow. Emilio is particularly proud of the involvement he had in the design and construction of the company’s then new headquarters, a state of the art film production and post-production facility, at the time the only one of its kind in the Caribbean region. Emilio was also a founding partner of CineTrix, a digital visual- effects company.
Today Emilio works as an independent director of photography, camera operator and still photographer. With over 20 years of experience, he’s had the chance of working with a variety of directors, production companies, advertising agencies and clients, in campaigns for numerous product categories, subjects and markets, including consumer goods, food, beverage, cars, banking, pharmaceutical and many more. He has shot in a number of locations around the US, including Los Angeles and New York, and in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. This has allowed him to explore different visual styles depending on the subject matter as well as to develop great flexibility in dealing with changing production demands.
Aside from TV commercials, which have been the bulk of Emilio’s work, he’s been the Director of Photography in a couple of feature films, several documentaries, corporate projects and music videos. He has been 2nd Unit DP and camera operator in a few films, camera operator on the Jennifer Lopez/Marc Anthony feature "El Cantante," and operator on several live concert projects, including Ricky Martin, Yanni, Maná and Ednita Nazario among others. His latest long format projects were the 2014 and 2015 editions of the Banco Popular de Puerto Rico TV Special the latter of which was shot in Cuba and Puerto Rico.
